About Tucson Botanical Gardens
The Tucson Botanical Gardens connects people with plants and nature through art, science, history, and culture. Located on the historic Porter property, the 5.5-acre site features 20 distinct gardens showcasing the diversity of plants that thrive in the Sonoran Desert. The gardens offer a tranquil escape with specialized collections ranging from cacti and succulents to tropical butterflies.
History & Heritage
The property was originally the longtime home of Rutger and Bernice Porter, who established a nursery and landscaped the grounds starting in the 1920s. In 1964, horticulturist Harrison G. Yocum founded the Tucson Botanical Gardens, and in 1968, Bernice Porter donated her property to the City of Tucson to serve as a public garden. The gardens have since expanded significantly, adding features like the Butterfly Magic exhibit in 2004 and continuing to preserve the Porter family legacy.
Signature Feature
Cox Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion
The Cox Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion is Southern Arizona's only tropical butterfly greenhouse, open from October through May. It features live tropical butterflies from South America and Asia fluttering among vibrant orchids, hibiscus, and carnivorous plants. The immersive exhibit provides a stark, lush contrast to the surrounding desert environment.
