The conservatory was built in 1895, modeled after the Glass Palace of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. In 1974, the original glass structure, known as the Palm House, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility underwent a major expansion in 1992 when Columbus hosted AmeriFlora '92, adding 58,000 square feet of new spaces.

The John F. Wolfe Palm House is the original 1895 glass structure built in the grand Victorian style. It features more than 40 species of palms and is illuminated by a permanent light installation by contemporary artist James Turrell.
