Brookgreen Gardens was established in 1931 by Archer Milton Huntington and his wife, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, on the site of four former rice plantations. Their vision was to create a showcase for Anna's sculptures and other American artists. The property, originally 9,100 acres, was opened to the public in 1932, becoming the country's first public sculpture garden. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984.
