About New Orleans Botanical Garden

The New Orleans Botanical Garden is a lush 10-acre sanctuary located within City Park, showcasing an extensive collection of temperate, tropical, and semitropical plants. It stands as a rare surviving example of public garden design from the Works Progress Administration era, blending natural beauty with classical architecture. Visitors can explore diverse themed areas, including the Zemurray Azalea and Camellia Garden, and admire the extensive collection of Enrique Alférez sculptures.

History & Heritage

Originally known as the Rose Garden, the New Orleans Botanical Garden opened in 1936 as part of a massive City Park development project funded by the Works Progress Administration. The garden was designed by architect Richard Koch, landscape architect William Wierdorn, and sculptor Enrique Alférez in the popular Art Deco style of the era. After a period of decline in the mid-20th century, the garden underwent significant restoration in the 1980s, leading to its renaming and the addition of new facilities like the Pavilion of the Two Sisters. Despite severe damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the garden was swiftly restored and continues to expand with new features like the Helis Foundation Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden.

Signature Feature

Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden

The garden houses the largest collection of sculptures by Mexican-American artist Enrique Alférez, seamlessly integrated into the landscape. These Art Deco masterpieces, created during the WPA era and beyond, include iconic works like 'The Flute Player' and 'Rain Goddess'. The sculptures add a unique artistic and historical dimension to the botanical displays.
