It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as a Florida Heritage Landmark.

History & Heritage

The garden was originally founded in 1932 as McKee Jungle Gardens by land developers Arthur G. McKee and Waldo E. Sexton on an 80-acre tropical hammock. Landscape architect William Lyman Phillips was hired to design its streams, ponds, and trails. After closing in 1976 and facing development, 18 acres were saved by the Indian River Land Trust in 1995 and formally dedicated as the current botanical garden in 2001.
