About Boerner Botanical Gardens
Boerner Botanical Gardens features glacial fieldstone walls and original, handcrafted limestone statuary. The gardens offer a variety of themed displays including a renowned rose garden, peony garden, and daylily garden, providing a haven for city dwellers and a living tapestry across twelve distinct areas.
History & Heritage
The idea for the gardens was conceived around 1929 by Charles B. Whitnall, who sought to create a haven for city dwellers. He partnered with landscape architect Alfred L. Boerner to design the 40-acre space carved from Whitnall Park. The gardens were built with the help of Depression-era government work relief programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration, and were officially named after Boerner in 1957.
Signature Feature
The Rose Garden
The Rose Garden is an original and signature space at Boerner, showcasing many varieties created by renowned rosarian William Radler, the creator of the Knock Out Rose. It serves as a vibrant centerpiece of the botanical gardens.
