About Elizabeth Park Rose Garden
Elizabeth Park Rose Garden is the oldest municipal rose garden in the United States, located on the border of Hartford and West Hartford, Connecticut. The park spans over 100 acres and offers formal gardens, green spaces, and recreational facilities. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a premier destination for horticulture enthusiasts.
History & Heritage
Elizabeth Park was officially opened to the public in 1897, named after Elizabeth A. Pond. The Rose Garden itself was established in 1904 by Theodore Wirth, featuring a distinctive layout with rustic arches. In 1912, it became the first official test garden for the American Rose Society. Today, the original arches remain the centerpiece of this historic landscape.
Signature Feature
Rustic Rose Arches
The original rustic arches installed by Theodore Wirth remain the centerpiece of the Rose Garden. During peak bloom in June, these arches are completely covered in climbing roses, creating a spectacular and fragrant tunnel effect. They provide a highly photographed, romantic backdrop that draws visitors from across the region.
