About Norfolk Botanical Garden

Located in Coastal Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk Botanical Garden spans 175 acres of diverse horticultural displays. The garden is home to more than 60 distinctive themed gardens, 95 species of birds, and 30 kinds of butterflies. It is recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is powered entirely by renewable energy.

History & Heritage

The garden was founded in 1938 through a collaboration between Norfolk City Manager Thomas P. Thompson and horticulturalist Frederic Heutte. Under a Works Progress Administration (WPA) grant, 200 African-American women and 20 men cleared the initial 75-acre site. By March 1939, thousands of azaleas, rhododendrons, and daffodils had been planted. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Signature Feature

Bicentennial Rose Garden

Completed in 1976 in honor of America's 200th birthday, the Bicentennial Rose Garden spans 3.5 acres. It features over 3,000 individual rose bushes representing more than 430 varieties. The garden was previously one of 23 testing sites for the All-American Selection for roses.
